Chapter 24

“Here They Come!”

Castillo

The alien airships had brought in over 1,000 Raagaas, 400 to guard the plasma cannons; the other 600 to climb the mountain. They also brought in over 60 Jammies most of them stationed with the plasma cannons. Moving up with the giants ascending the eastern side of the mountain were a dozen Jammie gunners who were carried up on the backs of the much bigger Raagaas.

As the giants climbed higher and reached each strip of the road between the sections that had been lifted out they sent their best climbers up to the next section of the switchback. Once there they secured climbing lines for those waiting below. The surprisingly nimble aliens moved quickly despite their heavy bodies. The final stretch of roadway that led to the very top had been taken out in an explosive blast set off by the last of the civilian engineers before they boarded the Moscow for the flight to New Hope Town. All that was left now of that last fifty feet was a sheer drop to the rubble-strewn road section below. As more and more of the giants reached the uppermost section of roadway that ran below the breastworks they hauled up long, heavy Raagaa rope ladders and set them in place for those following. These rope ladders had anchor-like grapnels that were thrown up and over the top of the wall. Then the ladders were hauled up and tied off. These big rope ladders were strong enough to support several of the giants at a time.

“Here they come!” someone shouted warning when the Raagaas started coming over the wall. About 25 rope ladders had been placed along a hundred-plus yard stretch then the Raagaas began their final climb. The only thing slowing things down for them was the fact that only so many could climb at the same time and that was what gave the Rangers a chance to kill most of them as they reached the top.

“Lights on!” shouted Claudia Stairs and all the APC and ATV headlights came on illuminating a 150-yard length of the eastern side of the mesa. Dozens of the giant aliens had already reached the top and the first were starting to charge at the Rangers.

“Snipers! Fire!” Petra Kaufman ordered and the Colonial Security sharpshooters opened fire. They were to concentrate on any alien heads that showed themselves over the wall in the center of the line.

“Anvil Company! Fire!” Li Hua Chin ordered and her Rangers opened up on the aliens charging at the northern end of the Rangers’ line.

“Javelin Company! Fire!” Grace Ryan ordered and her Rangers targeted the aliens charging at the southern end of the Rangers’ line.

The APCs held their fire, waiting for the order from Claudia Stairs.

The first of the giant aliens to come over the top were quickly killed but they were reaching the top in increasing numbers, climbing rapidly and hopping over the wall faster than the Rangers could shoot them. Spiked iron balls were launched at vehicle headlights and too may hit their targets.
